How J Balvin gave me friends

When you meet people who make you feel safe, you know you've found your friends.

On a Sunday in Arambol, when I had just moved into Mitra Hostel, I joined my hostel mates to an open mic at Twice in Nature. Down to meet more new people after my lonely yoga retreat, I was looking around on the dance floor and one thing caught my eye. Through the crowd of people dancing, I saw one guy wear a white t-shirt with a colorful flower logo on it, which I recognized. It was the logo of my favorite artist, J Balvin. I was wearing it myself, as a sticker on my fanny pack. Without thinking a single thought, I went straight to the guy and said: “Do you like J Balvin?”. That question was taken with a smile and somehow it turned into a conversation that didn’t have an end in sight. His name was Patrick, he came from the UK, and lived in India. He had lived in many different places, traveled quite a lot, and was just a happy, energetic person who seemed to be excited to talk about literally anything. His friends also joined in on the conversation and I kind of felt right at home with these people? After talking for maybe an hour?

I had made my friends for the rest of my stay. We saw each other almost every day: sunsets, dinners, coffees, nights out. I connected mostly with Patrick and his friend Dave, who radiates a certain sense of peace and makes everyone around him feel at ease. With them, I felt comfortable enough to step out of my comfort zone and try a few new things, with which they guided me beautifully. They crafted my favorite day in Goa, being the Hilltop Vagator psytrance rave last Friday (02/02/24). From smoking new things with the kind instructions of Patrick, to upgrading the psytrance experience to a whole new realm, they were there to make me feel at ease. And I’m eternally grateful for their mere existence.

And here I am, in a whole other state of India, still wondering how and why this group of gems entered my life so smoothly, left such a beautiful impression, and are now perhaps just a memory. All I know is that everything happens for a reason. I might understand it one day.
