Being the capital of India, Delhi has a lot to offer. Although it's known for noise-filled chaos, I will guide you to beautiful places and great food spots that are worth your visit in this bustling hub.
If I'm honest, Delhi was my least favorite place in India. (Okay, maybe being stuck in Tiruchirappalli was worse, but that's a whole different story.) I was in Delhi in January 2024, during a cold wave, as the first stop of my big Asia trip. It was about 12°C and in-house heating is not a thing. I was freezing and not in the best mood. On top of that, air quality is disastrous and everything was extremely loud and dirty. But you know, it's all bareable. I was expecting so much worse, hence I was very well-prepared (except for the cold lol). On the other hand, food was a-ma-zing! It's all a matter of perspective.
Delhi is pretty well-connected by several metro lines, so I'd focus mostly on the safety of the area where you're staying. The South-East is generally a little more upscale, clean, and safe. I'd suggest to search for accomodation around Greater Kailash and Okhla.
In order to avoid the infamous Delhi Belly (getting sick from the food), I always recommend joining locals to grab food. Believe it or not, Indian people don't just eat at any street food stand without getting sick. They thoroughly investigate wheter the place is higienic, which oils they use, and how fresh the ingredients are. Go food spot hunting with an Indian and you will be fine. Another trick I've heard, is to avoid eating meat, which has kept me safe and sound throughout my trip.
There's a lot to see in Delhi! From gorgeous temples to famous landmarks, you can spend 3 full days visiting them all. Just avoid having a rather old-fashioned local show you around, because they will bring you to "fancy" malls and overpriced places that are not interesting at all.
Every place comes with its own quirks. I lived them all in Delhi so you don't have to! Read the tips & tricks article to find out what to absolutely bring, how to behave, and what to avoid!
